Holy Year 2027 in Santiago: dates, Holy Door and stays

The event

It is a Holy Year in Compostela when 25 July, the commemoration of the martyrdom of Saint James, falls on a Sunday; the cycle runs every eleven, six, five and six years, and 2027 is the next. The Holy Door of the Cathedral, walled up in ordinary years, opens on 31 December 2026 and stays open throughout 2027; the Cathedral has not yet announced the date of the closing ceremony.

During the year, pilgrims who visit the Cathedral, pray for the Pope's intentions, confess within fifteen days before or after and receive communion may gain the plenary indulgence the Church grants in a Jubilee year. The Cathedral's pilgrimage pages set out the conditions.

What a Holy Year does to Santiago

Holy Year celebrations can bring heavy demand for the Pilgrim's Office on Rúa Carretas, Cathedral access and old-town rooms, especially around 25 July. Leave room in the plan for queues and confirm accommodation before arrival.

For anyone finishing a Camino in 2027 the practical answer is to fix the Santiago nights early, choose between the old town and the station area with the crowds in mind, and decide in advance whether one night or two is right for the recovery days.

Planning the arrival

City bus 6A connects Santiago's airport with the city. Check the dated timetable, your stop and the return to the airport before choosing an old-town or station-area room. Allow for the final walk with luggage; winter rain can make a longer walk less appealing.

For the 31 December opening, plan the certificate separately. The Pilgrim's Office lists 09:00–19:00 hours and closes on 25 December and 1 January. Its QR queue does not guarantee collection on the same day. One night works only if your arrival, an open office day and departure fit; a second night can leave another open day for the office or recovery, but does not guarantee a certificate.

Confirm luggage collection and hotel storage for your actual dates before attending the ceremony or leaving for the airport. Correos' published winter hours conflict, so do not build the return around an unconfirmed collection time. Check the Cathedral's current notices again before travel rather than assuming today's arrangements continue through 2027.

Good to know

• The opening ceremony time and pilgrim conditions come from the Cathedral, which has not yet published a 2027 calendar; check its pilgrimage and liturgy pages before fixing your dates.
• The Cathedral's notice checked 26 October 2026 temporarily moves the 09:30, 12:00 and 19:30 Pilgrim Masses to San Agustín during altar works and suspends the Botafumeiro during restoration. Check again for your visit; this does not establish the arrangements for the Holy Door opening or all of 2027.
• Compare old-town, station-area and wider-city availability for the feast week and New Year opening. Choose the base together with the walking and transport plan, rather than assuming rooms will remain available elsewhere.
